INSPIRED YET?
I am a clinical nutritionist who has always had a deep-rooted passion for good food. After all, I was born and raised in Italy. . . the land of good food!
While working as a patient advocate, I made my initial connection with food as a means to heal. I had just been diagnosed as a pre-diabetic. It was during these years that I worked for Dr. Deborah Penner, my mentor, that I was first introduced to a ketogenic diet when only a handful of people were writing or talking about it.
You could say I was an early adopter and researcher for something that is now a 'trend.'
While my focus had always been on whole, unprocessed foods as in the Paleo diet, I used my own personal diabetic challenge as fuel for my research in the ketogenic diet to help me control my blood sugar and hormonal issues.
This way of eating has been the solution for many of the serious metabolic issues I saw in my patients, and myself, and it has been the most valuable tool not just for weight loss, but also for healing. One of the biggest mistakes of most weight-loss diets is that they completely ignore health in the quest to shed pounds.

What Exactly Is Ketosis and Why Do I Want It?
At a very young age, we were taught all about the food pyramid and we were convinced that we needed to eat so many servings of carbohydrates, and consume so many servings of dairy in order to achieve optimal health. Then we were told that fat was a villain and to replace real butter with processed margarine among so many other fat-loathing misconceptions. We were drawn closer to eating processed foods and farther away from naturally sourced and prepared meals.
We are designed to use different types of fuel for energy, but some fuels are more efficient than others. We are taught that glucose is the main source of energy in the body, but when we stop eating glucose, our body enters ketosis. In ketosis, the body uses fat instead of glucose for fuel. That means both dietary fats and stored body fats are burned.
A nutritionally well-balanced ketogenic diet can help you alleviate chronic pain, lose fat while maintaining muscle, and even stabilize blood glucose for diabetics and pre-diabetics.
